Challenge #13: Sunshine: Eat it, Pop it or Soak it Up!

~ There are many studies coming out linking the use of Sunscreen with an INCREASE in Cancer!! If you know you're going to be out in the sun, consider trying this All Natural Sunscreen recipe to naturally block the harmful rays without blocking Vit D absorption.
~ There is alot of speculation over how much VitD we actually need, but we do know that our bodies produce close to 10,000 IU of VitD during sun exposure - so it would make sense that this is an assumed upper limit.  Most doctors will recommend between 1000-3000 iu daily in the summer & 2000-5000 iu daily in the winter months.
~ It is always preferred to get your vitamins in a natural way through sun exposure & diet, but we are undeniably deficient in both of these areas. This is where supplementation is key! Most VItD pills come in 1000iu. Vit D3 is preferred because it is more biologically active than just straight Vit D, but this comes from an animal source which would not be suitable for most Vegans. VegLife makes a great product, supplying 2000 iu per dose. You can also purchase D Drops in adult & baby dosages.
~ It is best to have your Vit D levels tested so you know how deficient you are (because it's not a matter of "if your deficient" anymore). In Canada, this test is not easily covered any more unless you have an obvious, serious deficiency. You can purchase your own testing kit from the Vitamin D Council for $65. You want your levels to be between 40 - 80 ng.ml. Anything at or below 20 ng/ml is a severe deficiency.
